ThoughtBubble 2013

As promised herre is the first of many blogs I'm actually going to write and post for a change lol.

Last year was a massive year for me in a few ways. but one of the biggest things was exhibiting at Thought Bubble in Leeds. Which for those who don't know is one of the biggest and possibly the best comic convention in this country. Its a fantastic event where small press guys like myself can rub shoulders with the big boys in the industry and there is no snobbery or anything like that. It's just a lot of fun with a lot of people who love comics. Well this year I'm going again and like last year I'm sharing  a stall. This year I shall be sharing the stall with fellow comic creator and awesome artist Mike Jackson aka @Mikimus_Prime so you all need to come and visit us and get cool sketches ok :-).

As for what comics will be coming to Thought Bubble, well I'm currently working on the first full issue of 'The Intrepid Endeavours of Cornelius Blow' which will introduce all the main characters and story of what I hope will be a long running series. I am also working on the first pages of 'Potemkin2205' which is a very different kettle of fish to Cornelius, but more on that another time. Finally along with the comics I'm hoping to have progressed far enough on the Cornelius game to be able to bring a copy along to show people.

So all in all a big year ahead for comics and this is on top of all the other illustration projects I have planned. Watch this space for updates and I'll keep you all posted.

Getting my Arse in Gear

3/5/2013

This year so far has been mentally busy with all manner of day to day life type things getting on top of me. This is in part cos that's the nature of things but also because of my woeful ability to organise my thoughts and actions, which I'm sure many of you have noticed by now. This stops here!!!!!
I have so many projects simmering away including comics, miniatures and world domination plots that I've decided to get my arse in gear and actually sort things out. As such over the next few weeks I will be running a series of blog posts about key things on my mind and desk.

For starters I will be displaying at Thought Bubble again this year so will be doing a lot of work on Cornelius as well as a few other very cool comic projects. I will also be working on the Cornelius game and trying to get the rules and some miniatures done for that. No small task I hear you say but I'm determined to get things cooking this year.

As for other miniatures. I have decided to stop being quite such a butterfly and set some targets and goals. Firstly I won't be attempting Golden Demon as I originally intended due to the arrogance of a certain company who shall remain nameless. I will channel this effort into finishing some of my other projects.  Namely my 15mm Gruntz force, Dystopian Wars Prussians, and my Infinity Ariadnas. My only dalliances into GW territory will be for Dreadfleet and Epic.

So as you can see I have a lot of things to do but if i manage them correctly then I dont see any reason why they can't be done. Next post will be about the comics projects and Thought Bubble so watch this space.

Adventures in 15mm

I've been off work all this week with exacerbated asthma, and though this is a royal pain in the posterior, as it means pills, puffers and wheezing like an old man. It also means I've been able to finally sit down and start painting up some minis. In particular I started on  my 15mm goodies. 15mm is a relatively new thing to me and as such is a breath of fresh air from the institutionalised wargaming I've been used to in the past. The freedom 15mm presents is incredible. Originally I was going to try and conjure up my own rules etc, however I have now realised there really isn't any point when some of the rule systems out there are so open that they can fit exactly with what I'm after. My main case in point for this is Gruntz. Written by Robin Fitton this game offers almost endless possibilities in unit design and more. This coupled with the numerous miniature manufacturers out there producing fantastically detailed models just makes things even better, and this is before I've even thought about converting and scratch building.
Now for those who don't know my 15mm dabbling was always intended to represent the Earth / Mars civil war which pre-dates the events in my graphic novel 'Potemkin 2205'. With this in mind below is a picture of my first painted 15mm Mars colonist. Now I just need to find some money to buy others. Hmmm..........

A base by any other name......

In remarkably quick time for me I've based up a big chunk of my new 15mm figures. I decided to experiment a little with them and not do the normal stuff. I already knew that my game Potemkin : Insurrection was mainly based in the corridors of space ships and stations, or military complexes etc, so thought decking steel bases it is! I also started thinking about base sizes. Now the norm is the good old fashioned penny or a 12mm washer etc. Great. I however seem to have a mass of 25mm round bases kicking around so thought why not try it. They're not massively bigger than a penny! This was the result....

The floating guys look great in my opinion. As does the EVA model. The problem is the EVA guy is bigger than most of the other troops I've got. Meaning they would look a little lost based up like this. So the theory is..... bigger troops fancy characters etc get the 25mm base and minions and the like get a penny sized base suitably bedecked. much like the Space Marines and Terminators of a certain other game which shall remain nameless. :-)
My next job will be to finish basing the rest of the troops up then start painting.

A new beginning in 15mm

They've arrived!!! My new 15mm EVA suits that is. Ive finally taken the plunge and entered the world of 15mm miniatures, and may I just say I'm glad I have. I've always wanted to develop games based around my ideas. In particular 'The Intrepid Endeavours of Cornelius Blow' and my old favourite 'Potemkin 2205'. It wasn't until recently and after speaking to several of my twitter chums (namely @torgaming and @JamesMEWilson) that I started to get a better sense of direction regarding them. In a nutshell I am developing three games. One for Cornelius and Two for Potemkin 2205. The latter is where the 15mm slots in nicely.

I recently ordered some bit from GZG (Ground Zero Games) and today the postman dropped off the goodies.

I bought SG15-V10, SG15-V11, and SG15-V12. Which is the light EVA suits, the heavy duty EVA suits and the zero G suits. Above is the whole group together. I've put the penny on to A, show scale and B, because that's what they will be based on. The detail on them is quite remarkable considering their size! I was expecting them to be a little vague but as you can see in the pics below this is far from true. Once they are all painted up I can imagine this to be even more so.

These models will all be used on my Potemkin : Insurrection game. As such I will be aiming to base them to look like they are boarding a space ship or similar space based installation. I shall keep you all posted of progress through here and twitter. Would love to know you're opinions.

Finally got my bits and bobs through the post yesterday. Got Enough pieces to start building my first Zombots. Gonna look dead cool, only problem is the scale might be a bit off. I was aiming for 54mm figures but so far its turned out about 90mm?! Hmmmm not quite right but hey ho, think I'll use them as showcase pieces instead. Once ive got the first one properly finished and painted I'll post some pics. In fact I might even make an extra one to sell if anyones interested.
I also got Red Mutiny by Neal Bascomb. Ace book giving all the history behind the events of the battleship Potemkin. Invaluable research material.

Speak to you soon

Hi Folks.
Finally I've managed to make some ships for Potemkin 2205 : Firefight. It gives me something to actually apply rules to now which is pretty good. Hopefully things should start to take shape a bit more now. If anyone has any first hand knowledge on games development then I'd love to hear from you.

Later Folks
